Entering Avignon means diving into a deep and rich history of European’s Popes and Kings!

 

With its medieval streets, rising ramparts, stunning “Palais des Papes” and “Pont” this town is the epitome of timeless majesty. Its fascinating history allowed Avignon to gain recognition as UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995.

 

The region’s cultural heritage is also linked to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, north of Avignon, which is world renowned for its robust red wines. Nowhere in France are wine and tradition entwined as closely as in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The Alpilles

Surrounded by limestone hills and olive trees, experience firsthand some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Alpilles that inspired the likes of Van Gogh who spent much of his time in the nearby town of Saint Rémy de Provence.

 

The Carrières des Lumières is an old quarry that has now been converted to a museum and offers a uniquely immersive and often surreal art experience with projections of works from Vermeer to Van Gogh as well as from more modern artists.

 

Perched on rocky outcroppings lay some of the best-preserved medieval villages, the most emblematic of them Les Baux-de-Provence and its remarkable castle.

Cassis & the Coast

The charm of the Mediterranean Coast lies in its lovely coloured harbours and towns.

 

First, Cassis, once a small fishing village which has now become a key symbol of Provence. In the heart of the Calanques national park which runs along the coastline from Marseille, Cassis is famous for its monumental limestone cliffs, clear blue waters and exclusive vineyards.

 

You may choose to continue on to La Ciotat, steeped in navel tradition and littered with stunning 17th century homes.

 

Bandol is a great stopover to explore the area’s amazing vineyards and for a shopping session.

 

Last but certainly not least, Sanary-sur-Mer is mostly renowned for its traditional “Pointus” boats classified as Historic Monuments, its Mediterranean colored houses, its 13th century tower and its Wednesday market, once elected the most beautiful market in France.
